Linux Server Setup?

Hi,

I noticed that in the remote project tutorials the ftp has root folder access. Is this necessary to have access to the php and pear files?

What version of Linux is running in this tutorial? What ftp server are you running? And what is the ftp config? I am trying to setup a Ubuntu Dev server and all your help would be appreciated to get this running.

    I was using Ubuntu with the standard configuration. I gave my user write access to /var/www directory.
